Objectives:
1- To evaluate the adaptation success of deer into their new
habitat.
2- To detemine possible deer migration outside the re-stocking
area.
3- To know those sites favored by deer after being released.
4- To determine the use rate of artificial drinking and feeding
places by deer.

During
December 2000, 97 Texan white tailed deer (60 females and 37
males) from Texas, USA, were released at La Mesa.
The purpose of this project is to re-establish the species into
the area, without the use of contention fences, by providing
them with supplemental food and the availability of water sources,
so they could adapt and populate their new habitat.
After their release, permanent monitoring has taken place by
means of night counts using artificial light, and by physical
counting of individuals over transects (roads and trails) during
daylight hours, plus the direct observation of deer at drinking
and feeding areas. |
